Envyrozone Property Management Customer Experience – GO Transit

GO Transit is Canada’s first interregional public transit system to link Toronto with the surrounding regions of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). They service close to 55 million passengers a year through their network of integrated train and bus services, making them North America’s leading transit system.

Since 1967 GO Transit has provided safe, convenient and environmentally friendly transportation to the communities of the GTA. In that time it is estimated that they have safely delivered over one billion passengers.

GO runs 183 train trips and 2,074 bus trips daily, carrying about 205,000 passengers on a typical weekday — 170,000 on trains and 35,000 by bus. Moreover, their ridership is expected to grow.

The Requirements

With this high volume of people using their services everyday, GO Transit found themselves in the unique position to divert tonnes of recyclable waste away from landfills. The challenge they faced was doing so while keeping their budget on course. The waste management requirements inherent to an interregional transit operation already consumed a considerable portion of their budget.

Working with Envyrozone they engineered an efficient and tailored waste management program suited to their specific needs. Together they established a forward-looking, functional and adaptable solution to their waste management requirements while staying on track with their budget.

The Solution

GO Transit wanted a solution that would visually represent their recycling initiative while adhering to transit safety regulations. Since the terror attacks of 9/11 and the subsequent 2004 bombings in Madrid, safety regulations for commuter trains have understandably increased. To meet these standards GO required a waste receptacle that would keep their contents visible to security personnel and withstand harsh Canadian winters.

To meet their needs Envyrozone designed a three-stream receptacle with a stainless steel frame and mesh baskets within. The new design not only offered visibility of the basket’s contents but also proved resistant against the heavy salt required to keep their walkways ice-free. The transparency of the receptacle also allowed pedestrians to easily tell which opening was for what stream of trash: paper, plastic/aluminum, or non-recyclables.

The top was made from a clear polycarbonate similar to that used in hockey arena glass; tough, but see-through. The access panels were designed with locks so that no one could tamper with the contents or insert anything other than small waste items into the receptacle.

To complete the design, the sides of the box were emblazoned with the GO Transit logo which was in keeping with the rest of their site’s motif. The logos announce to transit users and passersby that GO Transit is onboard with recycling.
